Explore the beautiful Sittee River on kayak. The Sittee is one of the largest rivers in Belize and is filled with great opportunities to view wildlife. Manatees, crocodiles, turtles, iguanas and hundreds of species of birds can be viewed along with many types of tropical vegetation on this 2-3 hour tour.
The tour begins with a 3-hour drive up the Hummingbird Highway to Cayo, Belize's most Western district. The Hummingbird is considered to be the most scenic drive in Belize, as it winds its way through the Maya Mountains. On our journey we will pass many small villages as well as the nation's capital, Belmopan, and the bustling market town of San Ignacio, which sits high above the Macal River. We stop here to view the ruins of Cahal Pech, which have been partially restored and provide excellent examples of classic period structures.
You will enjoy lunch at one of a selection of restaurants along the way. Our journey continues West and brings us within a mile of the Guatemalan border. Here we will cross the Mopan River in a hand cranked ferry to access the large Mayan site known as Xunantunich ( shoo-nan-toonich ). This fascinating ruin has several plazas and a large selection of classic period structures. Those ambitious enough to hike to the top of El Castillo, the tallest structure on the site, will be rewarded with panoramic views of Belize and Guatemala.
With over 300 bird species found in the country, Belize is known as the birders paradise! This tour is specifically designed to enable you to view as many local bird species as possible.
We depart the Lodge quite early in the morning as this is always the best time to view birds. The first part of the tour takes you towards Sittee River Village where stops will be made once we encounter interesting birds. Once the land portion of the tour is completed we will board a boat and begin the river portion of the tour. Not only will you be able to see more bird species but also iguanas, sunning themselves on tree limbs hanging over the water; crocodiles idling peacefully in the warm river currents; and many more tropical birds of every description, fluttering past the towering mangrove forest. You will also learn about the mangroves which are important to our eco-system. The black Mangroves that grow along the banks of the Sittee River are believed to be some of the oldest on earth.
On calm days we are able to safely access the atoll and provide guests with fantastic scenery and awesome snorkeling amongst the miles of reef which outline this coral atoll. Glovers contains within its coral walls over 800 massive coral formations, many of which provide great snorkeling opportunities. The center of the atoll is a calm and beautiful lagoon with shallow water, teeming with marine life.
This island is one of the best spots for kayaking, snorkeling, diving and sailing. The colorful fish that inhabit the atoll are plentiful and leave you with a sense of awe and wonder! Your trip will include lunch on one of the small islands on the atoll and then continues with underwater exploration of the brightly colored and richly textured reef system.
Come with us on this exciting tour and experience the thrill of zip lining! This new facility is the longest zip line in Belize and is located near the Mayflower Mayan ruins, just 20 minutes drive from the lodge. Once fitted with you harness and safety equipment you will be guided to eight platforms varying in height from several feet to over 50 ft. The zip lines vary in length from 500 ft to the longest zip line in the country at over 2,000 ft. Zip through the jungle canopy and view the rain forest from a whole new perspective!
An evening boat tour to experience one of the natural wonders of Belize! This tour takes you through a jungle tunnel and mangroves directly into Anderson Lagoon, where you will experience the magic of Bioluminescence at its finest.
During the dry Season, bioluminescent dinoflagellates increase in concentration as the lagoon becomes saltier. When water is physically disturbed, these marine protists cause the lagoon to glow a brilliant cyan! It seems the water is alive with neon lights. Experience fishes darting around the boat glowing bright neon green and travel through schools of jellyfish all aglow! It is a truly amazing adventure. You've got to see it, to believe it!
