Xunantunich is situated on the Western Highway across the river from the village of San Jose Succotz and it can only be accessed by crossing the Mopan River on a hand-cranked chain ferry which leads to the temples. El Castillo rises 130 feet above the plaza level making it one of the tallest buildings in Belize and providing an impressive view of the entire river valley.
Xunantunich is the second largest Maya ruins in Belize. The “Stone Woman”, as per its Mayan meaning, refers to the ghost of a woman claimed by many people to inhabit the site. She is dressed in white and has fiery red eyes. She usually appears in front of El Castillo, ascends the stairs and disappears into a stone wall.

After arriving at the Tapir Mountain Nature Reserve, you will hike for approximately 45 minutes to the entrance of the cave followed by a swim across a large pool and finally wade into a dark tunnel and ceremonial chambers rich with Mayan artifacts.
This Mayan archaeological site is home to “The Crystal Maiden,” the skeleton of a teenage girl, a sacrifice victim, whose bones have been given a sparkling appearance by centuries of erosion inside the cave. As per the Belize Department of Archeology, cameras are not allowed in the cave and socks must be worn in the dry area of the cave for conservation purposes.
